Reconstruction of Sova´s mills at Kampa
Description of project:
That is beyond despute the reconstruction of Sova´s mills has been the most controversial and discussed building project of last years. The project of a Czech-American historian of architecture and patron of art, Meda Mládková, and preservationists´ intentions clashed at many issues which considerably delayed the project and gave rise to other complications. Though, the final look of the object is a compromise which keeps the outstanding and controversial modern art elements of glass ending of staircase tower and glass dormers on the one-storeyed building.
During the reconstruction partly preserved historical elements were renovated and completed with new construction following the contemporary character of the object and new function parts were successfully set into. Our company, therefore, had to take into consideration the construction substance requirements and in view of that, in parts where restoration works can not be provided, materials of the same character or corresponding in look were chosen.
Complicacy of the work was raised regarding to the embankment location of Sova´s mills just in the heart of the Prague historical reserve, which made the object almost inaccessible with transport service. In view of that fact, it was necessary to suggest an alternative of freight ship traffic to supply the construction site with coarse building material and to cart rubbish away.
The reconstructed area of Sova´s mills serves at present as a gallery of modern art – The Kampa Museum, where Mrs Mládková´s large valuable collection was placed. Apart from that there was even founded a base of maintenance and running the collection and new public places of entertainment. A restaurant and salad bar is in reach from the north part of the park and the yard as well. A new café with possibility of usage the river bank during summer season grew in the east wing directed to the Vltava river. Next to the exposition a documentary centre has been established there as well as a library, a caretaker´s lodge, scientific studies and a meeting-dining room for casual meetings and lectures.
