AZ Tower, with thirty storeys and record height of 111 meters, shall be the tallest building in the Czech Republic. Architecturally significant building is being built in Brno town between the streets Pražákova and Heršpická near M-Palace. The new landmark in Brno is composed of two blocks, between which is inserted a tube with communication core with stairs and elevator shafts. Two underground floors can accommodate 265 cars. On the ground floor, there are designed: car showroom, atrium with reception, shops, café, meeting halls and archives. Restaurant should be on the third floor. Upper 6 floors are designed with 12 exclusive dwelling-units. With this concept, these apartments will be for a long period the most prestigious and the highest dwelling above the earth in the Czech Republic. Remaining storeys of the building are intended to be used for commercial purposes.
Uniqueness and originality of AZ Tower hails from its height and stunning panoramas. At first glance, the Tower draws attention to its unusual shape – eastern block with two buckling and deviations from vertical axis forming characteristic building in the shape of letters A and Z.
Façade is comprised of large-format glossy tiles of two shades. Terracotta color gradually changes into white color blended into the clouds.
A separate issue is energy economics of AZ Tower, which is designed as a low energy building since initial architectural studies.
The building is founded on large piles, reaching depth of 30 m, which represent potential of thermal energy. The energy piles, due to heat pumps, collect heat in winter and cool bottom three floors in summer.
Even central ventilation system is unique. Circulating air between inner windows and outer ceramic façade balances a temperature difference between northern and southern façade, with a few servomotors located on each floor.
It is also planned that entire south façade of elevator shaft, which has total area of seven hundred square meters, is to be covered with photovoltaic panels that could serve as a source of electrical energy and for common areas. The building is to be equipped with rainwater harvesting facilities, returning water after cleaning as service water to common areas primarily. In addition, small wind turbines on the roof are designed to be installed, resembling DNA helix.
